Llŷn is recognised by many agencies and authorities as a very special place. Different aspects of Llŷn’s landscape and wildlife have been designated by various agencies for reasons of conservation.
Special Area of Conservation
European designation which protects rare habitats and wildlife. Pen Llŷn and the Sarnau and Llŷn Peninsula Cliffs.
Landscape of Outstanding Historic Interest
Registered by CADW, ICOMOS and the Countryside Council for Wales
Sites of Special Scientific Interest
A large number of sites have been designated by CCW because of their wildlife or geological interest
Llŷn Heritage Coast
A local designation which mostly covers the same section of coastline as the AONB
National Nature Reserve
Ynys Enlli (Bardsey Island), a wildlife habitat of national importance
Special Protection Areas
European and international designation aimed at protecting birds and their habitats. 2 areas, Aberdaron Shores and Ynys Enlli and Mynydd Cilan, Trwyn y Wylfa and Ynysoedd Sant Tudwal (St Tudwal’s Islands)
